WHAT IS WIRELESS CHARGING?
In this article we describe phones with wireless charging and answer the question What is wireless charging? You’ve come to the right place to learn more. Wireless charging is all about placing your smartphone on the charging pad and letting it do the rest.
In this type of charging, you don’t have to physically plug-in your device to the charger, as the charging pad is connected to the power source. The transmission of the electrical currents from the power source takes place via the wireless connection. Wireless charging has been around in recent years and so many people are becoming familiar with it in reference to Qi.
HOW DOES WIRELESS CHARGING TECHNOLOGY WORK?
The concept of wireless charging arose with the conclusion of Nikola Tesla that you could transfer the power between two devices through the electromagnetic field. It is based on the principle of the magnetic resonance or, in other words, power (IPT); a process of transferring electricity between two devices via coils.
There are five basic steps that explain that whole charging procedure:
- Firstly, the mains voltage is converted into AC of high frequency.
- Then the transmitter circuit sends this AC to the transmitter coil, in which it (AC) induces a time varying magnetic field.
- The magnetic field induced by AC is extended to the receiver coil within a specified distance.
- After that, the current is generated in the receiver coil of the device by the magnetic field. This process of transmission of the energy between the transmitter and the receiver coil is called resonant or magnetic coupling and it is achieved by the resonating the both coils at the same time.
- In the last step, the receiver circuit converts the current, flowing in the receiver coil into direct current, which is used to charge the battery.
During this whole process, the power is safely transferred over the air gap and other non metal objects that may exist between the coils. To extend the range of the power to be transmitted, the addition of extra or larger transmitter coils is possible.
WHAT IS Qi?
Qi is actually a worldwide standard for the wireless charging of the battery operated gadgets like smarphones, MP3 players or tablets etc.
There are many mobile device manufactures that are currently working with the standard, including Asus, HTC, LG Electronics, Nokia, Samsung, Sony and so on. Also there are over 129 electronic devices that are Qi enabled and most of them are smartphones.
WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF WIRELESS CHARGERS?
The biggest plus point of Qi wireless charging tech is that the smartphones and the chargers with varying manufacturing companies can be compatible. The only requirement is that both the sender and receiver need to be Qi specified. There are unlimited phones all around the world and each make has its very own charger, so that when you buy a new device, you have to get its new compatible charger as well. Qi wireless charging just keeps you away from all this hassle of different charges, empty batteries and cable spaghetti.
PHONES WITH WIRELESS CHARGING:
As stated before, there are two main components that are important for Qi, which are the charger to transmit the power to the phone and the receiver that is able to collect the power and charge the battery.
Now there are two types of devices:
- Some devices have the build-in WPC standard receivers of wireless charging in their phones
- Others do not support it out of the box, but you can enable the functionality by installing the correct Qi Wireless Receiver accessory.
